![]() ![]() ![]() Character archetype: damsel in distressĪll gothic romance has a damsel in distress, and Annaleigh fits the stereotype perfectly. The weather is terrible the entirety of the book, with storms, fog, and other atmospheric and perfectly timed phenomenon such as howling winds and eerie noises that can’t be explained. The atmosphere of House of Salt and Sorrows fits gothic romance as well, with creepy family portraits, eerie descriptions of burial vaults, along with haunting imagery throughout keeps the reader in suspense with every turn of the page. Highmoor gave me major Crimson Peak vibes… in other words: if this house was real I wouldn’t go near it to save my life! The setting of gothic romances are usually set in a seemingly haunted house or castle. It’s picturesque, if you’re looking to get murdered. Highmoor is on a craggy cliff, overlooking an unkind sea with jagged rocks and crashing waves. House of Salt and Sorrows is set in a “haunted” house, or rather, it’s said to be cursed. What makes ‘House of Salt and Sorrows’ a gothic romance? ![]()

The major issues that are explored in the novel are peer pressure and body issues. Park is half-American, half-Korean, and despite being ‘accepted’ among the locals feels like an outsider due to his Asian features. Eleanor is a ‘big girl’, has red hair and an eccentric sense of style mostly due to her family’s financial conditions, due to which she stands out in a crowd and is butt of many jokes. The novel progresses as the POV shifts between Eleanor and Park. The novel is set during 1986-1987 in Omaha, Nebraska and follows the lives of two teenagers while exploring issues like peer pressure, identity and body image. In response, though taking time out to come to the brink of war with France, Congress authorized the construction of a federal navy whose six-frigate core numbered “the most powerful ships of their class in any navy in the world.” The U.S. Enter the “Barbary pirates,” privateers of four Arabic states that seized American ships and sailors in a sort of elaborate protection racket-one that England, the world’s foremost naval power, could have easily crushed but instead used as a “check against the growth of economic competition from smaller maritime rivals,” particularly the upstart U.S. Whether the new country needed a navy at all was a matter of hot debate among rival political parties, even as America’s merchant fleet became an important presence in the Mediterranean and Caribbean markets. After the Revolution, writes Toll, “what little remained of the Continental Navy was taken entirely out of service,” the ships auctioned off and the men dismissed. At the time of the Revolution, America’s navy amounted to a ragtag collection of privateers and merchantmen even John Paul Jones’s celebrated raid along the English coast was a freelance operation. That gross oversimplification points to a historical accident that debut author and historian Toll capably works. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The prince is nice to her, but he doesn’t know she’s a cyborg.
